Apprenticeship
The Heavy Duty Equipment Technician (HDET) apprenticeship program is a combination of time spent on the job and in school training. A Heavy Duty Equipment Technician apprentice must complete a four-year program including on the job and in-school hours of training as follows:
- Technical Training: 4 levels, 840 hours
- Level 1,2,3,4 Heavy Duty Equipment Technician (HDET)
- Level 4 Truck and Transport Mechanic Level 4 (TTM)
- Level 4 can either be HDET or TTM depending on the trade that the student is registered in with ITA.
- Work based training: 6,360 hours
After completion of training, a passing grade on the interprovincial exam will result in the ITA Certificate of Qualification (Heavy Duty Equipment Technician), Certificate of Apprenticeship and the Interprovincial Red Seal Endorsement.
Heavy Duty Equipment Technician level 1
• Must be a Registered Apprentice and submit a TWID (Trade Worker ID) number
• Recommended:
- 1000 hours work-base hours
- Grade 10 or equivalent in Math, English and Science
- High School Graduation
Heavy Duty Equipment Technician level 2
• Must be a Registered Apprentice and have a TWID (Trade Worker ID) number
• Heavy Duty Equipment Technician (HDET) Level 1 OR
• Heavy Mechanical Foundations (HMF), OR
• Truck and Transport Mechanic (TTM) Level 1, or
• Transport Trailer Technician (TTT) level 1, OR
• Diesel Engine Mechanic (DEM) Level 1
• Recommended 1000 hours work-base hours
Heavy Duty Equipment Technician level 3
• Must be a Registered Apprentice and have a TWID (Trade Worker ID) number
• Heavy Duty Equipment Technician (HDET) Level 2 OR
• Truck and Transport Mechanic (TTM) Level 2, OR
• Diesel Engine Mechanic (DEM) Level 2

Tool kits are available for student use throughout the duration of the program and can be signed out at the ToolCrib at the beginning of the program. Tool kits are limited and reserved for students enrolled in specific Trades programs only. Tool kits do not include the required PPE and Classroom Supplies.
