This course introduces the practice of environmental planning including an overview of the history, techniques, and applications. This course provides an overview of planning as a practice and emphasizes the foundations of the role planning plays in society. While the course situates planning as a relevant force for addressing global socio-ecological challenges, its focus is on local, community-based action, which is demonstrated through inclusion of Canada-based case studies, such as those pertaining to various Indigenous communities. The course utilizes a problem-focused approach to learning, inviting learners to examine how planning has contributed to and seeks to solve pressing socioecological issues such as climate change, urban sprawl, and social and health inequalities. Through case studies, field excursions, and guest speakers, students will examine real-world planning issues and gain insight into the opportunities and challenges of balancing economic development, environmental sustainability, and community well-being.
