WALA 3210 Curriculum Development
3 Credits

The Curriculum Development course introduces participants to various approaches to curriculum development. The course primarily focuses on a learning centred approach to curriculum design. Participants will develop material related to their own teaching and learning contexts that link learning outcomes, delivery of instruction, and evaluation of learning. Consideration will be given to Indigenizing through design, distributed learning, meeting the needs of adult learners, addressing diversity, developing learning centred syllabi and lesson plans, and allyship. This course highlights the importance of Indigenous worldviews and the inclusion of local Indigenous content and perspectives in curricula.

Prerequisites
Participants need to have a recognized level of content expertise and therefore are required to have completed a Diploma, Degree, or Red Seal trades designation prior to entering this course.

WALA 3220 Delivery of Instruction
2 Credits

The Delivery of Instruction course provides participants with the fundamentals of lesson design and the opportunity to develop relevant lessons and deliver them in a collegial forum. It is a risk free environment where participants are encouraged to expand their instructional horizons and explore techniques that address cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains. Students will work in teams to critique and support lesson development as well as explore coaching techniques to further support professional development in the future. Participants will develop performance standards for their own reflection on their effectiveness in lesson delivery as well as explore means of student feedback to guide their practice.

WALA 3230 Evaluation of Learning
3 Credits

In Evaluation of Learning, students examine the practices that support the assessment and evaluation of learning. Students will gain the knowledge and skills to design and implement a comprehensive strategy that guides the progression of learning. This includes understanding summative and formative assessment. Participants will plan, construct, and utilize ethical assessment strategies and instruments appropriate to their context of their teaching. Capacity will be developed to examine the cultures and demonstration of learning with students, including First Nations, Metis and Inuit students, to support authentic assessment of the learning outcomes.

WALA 3410 Distributed Learning: Navigating Strange Lands of Pedagogy At Distance
3 Credits

How do you do experiential place-based learning (EPBL) when you and your students are in different physical locations? In this course, you will learn how to design and facilitate distributed courses that engage students in meaningful, transformative practices that are accessible. You will explore ways for students to acquire content, make sense of concepts, practice skills and retrieval, apply understanding, and prove their competence and growth. Participants will also learn how to use instructional technology tools, such as a learning management system, web-conferencing platforms, and cloud collaboration software.
