OCGY 208 Intro Physical, Chemical and Geological Oceanography
3 Credits

This course introduces the history, methodology and fundamental principles of physical, chemical and geological oceanography. Some of the topics covered include: history and development of oceanography; methods; ocean basin structure; properties of sea water; salinity, temperature and density distributions; circulation; waves and tides; acoustics; the oceans and climates. Prerequisites
Any two pairs: BIOL 101 and 102, or CHEM 101 and CHEM 102, or GEOG 150 and GEOG 160, or PHYS 101 and PHYS 102

OCGY 209 Introduction to Biological Oceanography
3 Credits

Introduction to Biological Oceanography is a one semester course that introduces the history, methodology, and fundamental principles of biological oceanography. The course will provide the grounding principles necessary to pursue a career in marine biology, oceanography, or marine technical trades. Some of the topics covered include: biological oceanography; phytoplankton; zooplankton; benthos; fisheries and aquaculture; marine sediments; marine resources; and pollution of the sea. Local examples will be used to illustrate the material. Slide shows of marine organisms and issues bring the material to life.

BIOL 101 and BIOL 102

OCGY 210 Research Methodologies in Marine Science
3 Credits

This course is grounded in coastal Lands and Waters now called British Columbia emphasizing respectful, place-based learning. Learners will engage in a combination of field-based and laboratory-based research designs, experiments, and methods in marine science, while considering the relationships between ocean systems and the communities that depend on them. Through hand-on activities learners will develop fundamental skills to support career pathways in oceanography, environmental and marine technical trades. Topics include benthic and aquatic surveying techniques; marine micro- and macro-invertebrate diversity assessment; marine sediment profiling and analysis techniques; designing laboratory-based experiments; assessing and forecasting the impacts of pollution and climate change on marine biological communities; and applications of GIS as a tool. In parallel, this course introduces the foundations of research statistics, data interpretation, and data presentation.

Prerequisites
Two UC physical or natural science courses (BIOL, CHEM, GEOG, OCGY or PHYS).
