ACE 102 Traditional Ecological Knowledge
2 Credits
Based on the need for cultural perspective to science education and mutual support students will be introduced to the principles of traditional ecological knowledge in theory and practice. The course will be based on visits to local First Nations Communities interlaced with short introductory lectures in the classroom. During the visits, students will learn about traditional seafood harvesting and preparation techniques, traditional fisheries management and social systems. All presentations will be in form of lectures by elders or in question and answer format in an interactive group setting. Students will gain a better understanding of the significance of traditional ecological knowledge and its application in modern fisheries and land use management in several First Nations Communities.

ACE 134 Fishes of the Pacific Northwest
3 Credits
This course introduces learners to the ecology, physiology, life cycles, migration characteristics, identification traits, and fisheries and management practices for key fish species in Northwest British Columbia. The focus is on species that are harvested in commercial, recreational, and First Nations fisheries with a particular emphasis on the Pacific salmon species. This course will outline key identifying characteristics of salmon, trout and key non-salmonid species, including groundfish, Pacific herring, eulachon, and shellfish. This course analyzes enumeration and biological sampling techniques for salmon and other fish species. Attention will be given to the deep connections between fisheries and the Indigenous Peoples in the North Coast, with emphasis on stewardship practices of local First Nations.

ACE 141 Monitoring Aquatic & Intertidal Habitats
2 Credits
Learners will be introduced to techniques and methodologies relevant to the estimation of aquatic animal populations. Topics will include methods of counting and capturing aquatic animals for study, tagging equipment technologies, removal and recapturing methods for estimating populations, and passive quadrat sampling. Learners will also be introduced to the methodologies of monitoring intertidal zone habitats. Physical substrate characteristics and biological features will be used to define and map the intertidal zone.

ACE 142 Coastal Forest Measurements

This course introduces learners to natural resources and data collection skills used to monitor and assess the health and vigor of coastal forests. Learners will acquire the methodologies of forest resource inventories and understand the importance of sustained yield and integrated resource management. Learners will conduct silviculture plantability and free growing surveys that assess the fulfillment of reforestation obligations.

ACE 154 Surveying Field Techniques

This course emphasizes ethical field practices grounded in care for the land and respectful engagement on Indigenous homelands. It provides learners with introductory skills in compassing, distance and slope measuring, profile and differential levelling, and conducting closed and open traverses. Learners will gain hands-on field experience with various survey equipment including magnetic compasses, levels, clinometers and other relevant natural resources surveying tools.

ACE 175 Wildlife Conservation & Monitoring

Learners will recognize British Columbia's wildlife species and identify them according to their family and order through examination of their skulls and physical attributes. This course emphasizes the important connection between wildlife and Indigenous Peoples and practices, encouraging respectful awareness of Indigenous relationships with the land and animals. Learners will understand each species' habitat requirements and preferences and gain knowledge of the laws, regulations and management strategies that maintain and enhance the health and diversity of British Columbia's wildlife. Learners will also review techniques used by wildlife biologists to study mammal, bird, reptile and amphibian populations.

ACE 182 Stream Habitat Assessment & Restoration
6 Credits
This course introduces learners to the methodologies of conducting a fish and fish habitat assessment within stream ecosystems. Learners will gain the skills to identify fish species characteristics, distributions and relative abundance, and collect biophysical data for interpretation of habitat sensitivity and capability for fish production. Explaining how to sample for fish presence, collecting data on stream habitat characteristics, and gaining an in-depth understanding of the stream habitat requirements for salmonid species will be learnt. This course also introduces natural processes and resource development activities that can affect stream ecosystems, recognize signs of habitat degradation, and acquire techniques to improve and restore stream ecosystems. This course honours the sacred relationship between salmon and Indigenous Peoples, recognizing the importance of protecting and restoring stream ecosystems for future generations.

ACE 190 Temperate Rainforest Ecology

This course focuses on the ecology of the North Coast temperate rainforest. It will introduce the concept of plant associations, forest types, and Biogeoclimatic zoning. Emphasis will be placed on tree, shrub and plant identification at the species level. Learners will also be introduced to the physical, chemical, and biological properties, analysis, and classification of soils with emphasis on factors which influence plant growth. Fish and forest interactions and the management issues surrounding these resources will also be discussed in a holistic fashion. Learners will explore the deep connections between the temperate rainforest ecosystem and the Indigenous Peoples in the North Coast, with emphasis on the forest stewardship practices of local First Nations.

Environmental monitoring is an essential tool that supports in managing the impacts of various land use activities across British Columbia's diverse ecosystems. Learners will study the principals of environmental monitoring and will learn the role of an environmental monitor. This course introduces monitoring techniques in water quality, invasive species, weather, air quality, and explores municipal wastewater and drinking water management. Emphasis will be placed on using evidence-based monitoring practices and the importance of quality assurance to accurately report on the risks associated with industrial, recreational, and residential development in coastal ecosystems.
